Rivers of Sand

After picking up camp, and a good ham-and-eggs breakfast, we set out to load Rob and David's KTM 990 and BMW 1200 on the back of Juan's pick up truck.  David and Rob rode out to Guerrero Negro in the truck.  Andy and I were determined to try to get out of there riding our bikes ... even after all the stories we heard about the miles of sand and how hard the road had been hit by the hurricane last year.

It is interesting to ride through such an incredibly beautiful and unforgiving environment when your body's adrenaline is already going because of the "fear" of what lies ahead. Everything seems sharper, all the senses are in high alert, everything becomes memorable. Big fields of tall cactuses, incredibly wide rivers of sand, hills, drops, valleys, mountains.

Needless to say, it was hard, scary, exciting ... we made it through! And, managed to do it without falling.  A great sense of accomplishment that only helped to make the adventure even better.

We finally met with David and Rob in Guerrero Negro.  David went to see the doctor about his foot and decided to stay in town for the night.  The rest of us decided to go to Bahia Ojo de Liebre to camp for the night to go see the whales in the morning.  This area is a world heritage site because of its importance for gray whales.

Great ride through some surreal looking salt flats.  Arrived to the protected area and set up camp inside a palapa overlooking the ocean.  Most amazing stars that night ... can this be a sign for what we will experience with the whales tomorrow?
