Looking At Fear Right In The Eye

We started early as we try to get used to the time difference.  We had an unbelievably beautiful ride down the pacific coast to Ensenada ... no traffic, incredible coastline, fog, sunny, coves, cliffs ... nature at its best.

We found a nice coffee house in Ensenada to talk about the great ride we just experienced ... and to chill a bit more : )  We are now getting into the groove of things.  As we approached Ojos Negros (the site of my aborted attempt last time), the time for the big decision was fast approaching ... pavement all the way to San Felipe or venture off-road following the route where I crashed and burned before ... was I ready to get back on the horse?

After checking road conditions with some locals, we took the plunge and decided to go for it.  Nothing beats going off-road ... nature's magic, the beauty of the world, all is there, up close, to touch and feel.  It was a great easy ride for a while but trouble started about half way through ... it was rough and slow going, sand, mud, rocks ... a few wipe outs but nothing the four of us couldn't deal with ... it was also nice to know that we had plenty of water, food, and camping gear ... just in case things got ugly ... they almost did : ) ... but we got out of there and back onto asphalt.

On the way to San Felipe, we found surprisingly tall mountains, fertile valleys, beautiful scenery ... and a weird looking and very large salt marsh/swamp as soon as we got to the Sea of Cortes ... a very shallow ocean right there.

In San Felipe, we checked in our hotel and went to the beach for a swim ... just our feet, too cold. The ocean here is very shallow ... at low tide, the beach triples in size ... reminds me of Cornwall, England ... weird?

And, at night, Mexico at its best!  People everywhere, kids playing, bands playing all kinds of music, food vendors (churros, esquites, tacos, fruit) ... until the wee hours of the night.

We hear the road does not exist or is not very good to were we want to go tomorrow, the way we want to go. Worst case, we can ride on the beach!
